It's engineered wood — wood strands bound with resins and treated through the board for moisture and termite resistance, then milled with real wood-grain texture. It delivers the wood look with far better durability and dimensional stability than solid boards.

SmartSide® is lighter, easier to work, and has a warmer, deeper wood grain; fiber cement is denser, non-combustible, and lower-maintenance over the long haul. Both perform well in our climate. The honest split is grain-and-workability versus mineral durability and fire resistance — we'll lay out the trade-offs for your home.

Pre-finished ExpertFinish® options carry long finish warranties and resist fade well; primed-for-paint SmartSide® will need repainting on the normal exterior cycle, which our sun can shorten. Either way, keeping the finish and cut edges intact is what gives the substrate its long life.

It's treated through the board to resist moisture and termites, and with proper flashing, a weather barrier, and sealed cut edges it holds up well to Idaho conditions. As with any engineered wood, the key is keeping water out at penetrations and keeping the finish sound — both of which our install details address.

Yes. ExpertFinish® comes in a curated factory palette with the longest finish life; if you want a custom color, we install primed SmartSide® and field-paint it. The trade-off is custom freedom versus baked-on durability, and we'll help you decide.

LP® SmartSide® is engineered treated-wood strand product, not solid lumber, made from wood strands bonded with resins and treated through the SmartGuard process for moisture and termite resistance. That gives you a real wood look and easy workability without the knots, splitting, and rot risk of natural cedar. It's lighter and faster to cut than fiber cement, which helps on tall valley gables.

The treated strand and factory primer handle our UV, temperature swings, and freeze-thaw well when the boards are kept off the ground, properly flashed, and painted on schedule. The treatment resists fungal decay and insects, which addresses the main failure mode of older wood siding here. Keeping the bottom edges sealed and clear of dirt and sprinkler spray is the key maintenance point.

Cost tracks wall area, stories, tear-off of the old siding, and the trim and corner detail you choose, plus whether you go with pre-finished or primed-and-site-painted board. SmartSide's lighter weight can make labor on tall walls a bit more efficient than fiber cement, but sheathing repair behind the old siding is the wild card. We confirm the number with a free on-site look.

We're an independent contractor with manufacturer-trained installers who install LP® SmartSide® to LP's published specifications; we don't claim authorized, certified, or preferred status with LP. Following LP's nailing, gap, and finishing schedule is what protects the product warranty. Our own 3-year workmanship warranty covers the installation.
