Generally yes — their simple track mechanism, with no crank or counterbalance, makes them among the most economical operating windows per opening. That's why they're a smart way to stretch a whole-home replacement budget across more windows without giving up insulated low-E glass.

Not quite. A casement compresses against weatherstripping all around, while a slider's sashes pass each other on a track, so on a very exposed, drafty wall a casement seals tighter. For most openings a properly installed slider with a good glass package controls drafts well, and we'll flag the walls where the difference matters.

They're a practical pick where you want an easy-operating window over a kitchen sink or where a casement's outward swing would be in the way. They also pair well with rooms that need a wide view without a center post if you choose a single-slide design.

A slider seals with brush weatherstripping that the sash glides past, so it typically allows a little more air leakage than a casement that compresses shut. You can still get strong performance in Idaho's Northern zone by choosing a low U-factor, low-E glass, and gas fill. Keeping the bottom track clean also helps the sash close fully against its seals.

It can, but only the moving half of a slider counts toward the clear opening, so the unit often has to be wide to hit the IRC minimum clear width, height, and area. In narrow basement openings a casement usually qualifies at a smaller size. We measure the rough opening and size to the locally adopted code so the bedroom passes inspection.

Dirt, grit, and debris collect in the bottom track and bind the rollers, so the sash drags. Cleaning the track and checking the rollers usually restores smooth operation. If the rollers are worn flat or the sash has dropped, new rollers or adjustment will fix it; a sticking slider isn't automatically a sign you need a full replacement.

Many modern vinyl sliders let you lift the sash out or have a tilt feature so you can clean the exterior glass from inside, which is handy on upper floors.
